saying “you are a burden on society” is just such a weird framing of priorities

It’s like saying “wow, think how much better gas mileage your car would get if you weren’t sitting in it” or “think how dry that umbrella would be if you weren’t holding it in between you and the rainstorm”.

the things we create? they’re for us. they are meant to carry us. they are meant to protect us. we are meant to hold them up to keep us dry.

My CRPS will confine me to a bed for the rest of my life.
By end of tonight (May 21), $450 must be raised for my disability care & legal fees. Disability care is my only means of accessing water & basic hygiene.

Only care workers can provide me with consistent water and home cooked meals. Due to my complex regional pain syndrome [medical reports], I can’t even sit up or walk to a tap. My life itself depends on donations to fund disability care, with potential effects of neglect being: life-threatening dehydration; eviction to the streets from lack of paid cleaning; infections and cockroach bites from poor hygiene; and starvation. I’m also suffering severe deterioration, with my doctor explicitly stating that I may eventually need to live in a hospital if I don’t receive enough disability care now. Whether I receive enough donations will determine if I die from neglect, and if I’d live with the misery of more fatigue & pain for the rest of my life. I am begging you to consider donating to my disability care costs, as well as legal fees to challenge the government’s refusal to fund my disability care. To avoid scrambling to raise thousands of dollars within hours of a due date, donations must be gradually raised within a strict timeline.  Recurring donations for my care can be made here& must be **registered at this link** to be valid

                              PLEASE DONATE HERE
Automatic donations counter must reach: $450
PayPal & card payments are both accepted.

*NB: I have a new fundraising page as part of an annual update.

someone: haha my chickens are so spoiled, they get a heated coop!

me: haha mine too i built him 3 different nests and rubbed his feet while i sang to him as he fell asleep

other things people call “spoiling”:

• giving their chickens affection

• naming their chickens

• fan in the coop for hot days

• puzzle feeders during winter

• treating illness or injury

• taking them to the vet

actual ways to spoil chickens:

• baking them a daily batch of healthy and tasty bird bread instead of weekly

• buying the more expensive variety pack of dried bugs instead of just mealworms

• your house is their house

• TV in the coop

• favorite perches engraved with the chickens’ names

• taking your entire flock to see a movie at the theater

• imp colorful, iridescent feathers on your white rooster so he appears more attractive to the hens

• gold plated nest boxes lined with the finest alpaca fiber and hay

• a full-ride to their university of choice

this actually brings up an interesting point, jokes aside. As someone who keeps chickens as livestock, not pets, there are a lot of ways we only provide the bare minimum instead of actually caring for them like the valuable family members they are. Are there any things pet-chicken-blr can suggest to make my future hens more happy?

Happy, healthy livestock typically produce better (stressed hens will stop laying or lay really weird eggs, we see this a lot we ex-battery hens that were dumped for not laying every day, usually around 18 months old, and then when adopted and well cared for start laying again), so it has always been curious to me how some livestock are usually treated with so little care (it’s usually the cheap and quickly-reproducing livestock that are treated poorly).

Wee ramble done…some of these might seem like no-brainers, but a lot of folks don’t realize what commercial poultry are lacking:

• Access to real, direct sunlight (benefits include better absorption of calcium, stronger and more regular eggshells, better feather health which means more energy to put into eggs)

• Animal-based protein in their diet- offering mealworms, soldier-fly larva, crickets, and such is a great and relatively cheap way to do this

• Habitat control in the coop- at least a fan going with vents to move air and humidity, but adding a heater for when it is cold (frostbite should never be acceptable as inevitable for an animal), a well-insulated building, and screen-mesh windows to allow for air-flow and heat escape when it is hot.

• Clean water. Water allowed to set is likely to develop bacteria or become contaminated with gram-negative bacteria from rodents drinking from it.

• 3 x 3 square foot inside per bird, they must be able to move and get away from one another as needed.

• Daily health checks, know the birds well enough to tell when one is sickly, assess weights, make note of who has and has not laid yet (production hens are at a high-risk of egg related health complications)

• Treat sick birds. Do not just let them die or stay untreated and get the other birds sick. Take them to the vet if it is not something you can handle on your own.

• A varied diet. Give them fresh foods such as leafy greens, non-citrus fruits, cooked pasta, rice, grains/seeds (make sure grit is available as well)

• Outdoor space. They need room to move, run, jump, and play in order to maintain both physical health and mental health.

• A clean living-space. Don’t make them live in a layer of their own feces, clean out the living space and give them fresh bedding as needed. As a bonus dump the waste material into a compost pile and you’ll have awesome soil/fertilizer to sell or use for your own garden.

• Somewhere to dust-bathe. Dust-baths are needed for chickens to maintain feather and skin health, and promotes healthy social behavior.

• Don’t allow dogs or cats to harass and/or kill your birds. Needless to say it’s extremely stressful to the birds who survive and cruel to those that don’t.

• Scatter-feed special treats. Chicken-scratch (a mixture of seeds and grains) tossed around the ground for the hens to forage and find is great for mental stimulation, plus helps keep their beaks at a healthy length.

There is a lot more I could add, but these came to mind first. My birds are pets and show-birds (hopefully!) but that doesn’t mean good husbandry should be limited to just them. A last addition would be to learn and share what you learn and observe. Try to appreciate chickens as something other than an object. Read recent studies on them and their needs, you’ll learn a lot of really cool things that will help you understand them better, which will help you to care for them better.

Amazing advice, thank you so much!

On Thursday a presenter from Traffic 911, an organization that rescues human trafficking victims, came and spoke to my class and talked about how viewing teen porn and cp, even fictional:

  • Is used to normalize it to young teens to convince them this kind of thing is normal and okay
  • Makes the people who view it need harder and harder porn as the starting stuff stops gratifying them
  • Directly influences the demand for trafficked teens and children

So y’know everything we’ve been trying to tell “anti-antis” for years. Fiction impacts reality and you’re both engaging in pedophilia and assisting pedophiles if you take part in drawing this shit. Js.

I love this tea.

thinking about the statement that all maladaptive coping mechanisms were helpful and, well, adaptive, at some point, and that they become maladaptive when the circumstance changes or when their detriments outweigh their benefits, and how the framework of “this is no longer helpful to you” is probably better than “this is a bad habit/this is bad for you.” How much better “you don’t have to live like that anymore” feels than “that’s a bad habit you picked up when you were in a bad place.” “It’s ok, you can look now,” vs “you’ve been tainted/infected/sullied by a previous bad circumstance.”

Thought about this today while reading about hermit crabs.

Hermit crabs start out their lives tiny and defenceless, and they choose a small shell to protect them. When they grow too big for the shell, big enough that it stops them from growing more, they abandon it and move on to a shell better for them at that size.

Does that mean the old shell was a terrible mistake? No, because it protected them back when they were smaller and more defenceless! But now it’s limiting their growth, and it’s time for them to find a better shell.

Humans, like hermit crabs, pick up shells when we need protection. Sometimes, we need to ditch those shells to keep growing! If we look at them as shells instead of Irredeemable Moral Failures, it’s a hell of a lot easier to let them go.

Someone far from NYC (and/or doesn’t have much money) watches a musical on bootleg and

  • gets deeply moved
  • gets positive influence on their life
  • thinks about the show and discusses it with fans for months and years

when they get a little amount of money:

  • buys official recordings
  • buys libretto
  • buys scores
  • buys merchandises
  • goes to see a movie adaptation of the show
  • buys soundtrack and DVD of it
  • buys other works of the creators/performers

when they get to save more money:

  • goes to see a tour/local/school production of the show
  • and many other shows
  • manages to make a trip to NYC and pays for a ticket to see the show live
  • and many other shows

maybe some even gets inspired to be a performer/writer/artist in theatre:

  • works their ass off to be an artist
  • becomes an artist in theatre
  • contributes to the industry for decades

Someone far from NYC (and/or doesn’t have much money) does not watch a musical on bootleg and

  • nothing happens

This post is beautiful and speaks to me on a personal level.

ha op…. good luck getting places…. how else are you gonna move?

no… y’all don’t Understand. I have worn nothing but heelies every day for the past 3 or 4 years of my life. I go through about one pair of heelies every year because I friggin’ brake on them so much that the soles wear out and the shoes self-destruct. I have my blood and soul for these hipster lax skater shoes and I can’t stop because I’m committed at this point.

image

this is what my left shoe looks like. This is just used for walking and back up rolling since I’m dominant with my right foot.

image

THIS fucker is my leading shoe and the one I use to brake. this hunk a junk has like 45 degrees of Pure Heelie Brake Burn. it goes into the shoe itself at this point.

image

I am hardened every day through my battles of sick slides and rides. I am a war criminal of rolling shoes. I have been the reason some local places put back their “WE BAN HEELIES” signs. I wish these things could support my life style.

I miss my wife

safeanimes:

There’s a lot of pedophilia in anime.

To be absolutely fair, there’s a lot of pedophilia in all media - it’s a rampant societal problem, and to pin that on anime without acknowledging that the same problems that plague anime don’t also plague the rest of media/the world is kind of… well. Just a touch racist.

I personally enjoy watching media that does not contain pedophilia! Given I specifically enjoy watching anime, I enjoy specifically watching anime without pedophilia. That’s a hard thing to come by. (And, again, very much not an anime-specific problem!)

Thus, this blog. @safeanimes. I will be watching anime by anime to try to come up with a list of those that do not contain a drop of pedophilia. I will post updates with my progress - when I am forced to quit an anime because of the appearance of pedophilia, or when I finish one and it’s added to the list - as well as reblog posts made about any pedophilia-free anime I find.

Other nasty things will absolutely be taken into account while watching - racism, antisemitism, transphobia, homophobia, etc. - but the focus of the blog is specifically on pedophilia. Trigger warnings will always be included when recommending an anime.

Thank you for reading, and please, send me any recommendations you may have! Boosting is appreciated. 💕
